Petey was loved. It was impossible not to love him, as you've never met a sweeter dog. He was what I called an 'Intro to Brittanys Brittany', and he left my home at eight weeks of age to make Jean and Mark Miller's home all the more special. Of course we weren't prepared for just how stubborn Petey would turn out to be, because when he didn't want to do something he just did not do it! Eventually, with the help of his wonderful handler Sue, Petey learned to love to show. Between Jean, Sue, and myself we guided him to his show championship. I had the pleasure of having him on my lead for his final win which he did in style, taking an Award of Merit the next day his first time in the ring as a special.

Stubborness was not exclusive to Petey in that household. When he turned about two he found his legs like his father before him at that age, and suddenly the Miller's were having a tough time keeping track of him on their daily runs. "Train him to hunt" I said, the reply always being that they did not hunt and would try this and that instead. My opportunity arose when they were on vacation and I insisted they pick him up at our club's hunt training. I watched that summer as Mark and Petey found something they loved doing together. Mark went on to get Petey's Junior Hunter title, and then his own hunting license. On Opening Day that very next year the two of them walked into the woods and came back in record time with their limit for the day, putting more experienced hunters to shame! Oh yes, Petey was loved.

We lost Petey to what we believe now to be Powassan virus which caused severe swelling of his brain. There was nothing anyone could do, and we are left with a hole in a heart made so much bigger for Petey having been in it.
